Los Angeles graduate student and photographer Walter Thompson-Hernandez was tired being asked about his ethnicity — his mother is Mexican and his father is Black — so he created a new word to identify his ethnicity (Blaxican) and a photo series, called Blaxicans of LA, featuring others with a similar heritage.
"The term Blaxican is really is an example of the reinvention of language that exist in the U.S," Thompson-Hernandez told Fusion. "Blaxicans can act as a bridge to understanding black and Latino needs and challenges because at times [the issues they face are] similar."
The 15 powerful photos from Blaxicans of LA reveal the beautiful combination of these two cultures.
