Beyoncé hadn't been announced as a performer at last night's BET Awards, but we all know how much she loves a surprise. Fans were thrilled to watch her open the show with a powerhouse performance of her song "Freedom," along with rapper Kendrick Lamar.
The production began with dancers marching dramatically through the aisles and up to the stage while Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech played. Beyoncé then made her grand entrance by strutting through a pool of shallow water, a set piece from her current "Formation" world tour.
Her dancers then began to splash through the water around her while she belted out the lyrics.
Beyoncé eventually joined her dancers in kicking up water as flames rose behind them. It made for some absolutely stunning visuals to go along with her strong vocals.
Soon Kendrick Lamar appeared, rising from the floor of the stage to perform while Beyoncé and her dancers backed him up.
We've come to expect nothing less from Beyoncé at this point, and she never disappoints. There really couldn't have been a better way to kick off last night's awards, and to top it all off she took home four wins, including Video of the Year for "Formation."
