This year, Ashley Graham will be known for many things: Sports Illustrated's first size 16 cover model, H&M's campaign star, and a Glamour 2016 Women of the Year honoree. And now the supermodel is being immortalized in another way little girls (and everyone) can really celebrate. This year, at the Glamour Women of the Year Summit, she was gifted a Ashley Graham-Barbie doll by Mattel.
According to Glamour, upon seeing her Barbie Monday night, Graham said, "She got a round belly. She got round hips. She got round everything, yes!"
To create the doll, Mattel worked from full body shots of the model, and were sure to follow her request that the doll's thighs touch. In the past, Graham has opened up about being called "thunder thighs," and, despite the hate, has learned to love and celebrate them anyway.
"If I had a Barbie that was my size, I would have thought my size was normal, she told The Huffington Post. "Young girls now get to grow up seeing that their bodies are normal, which I think is so empowering and encouraging to the younger generation."
Graham's Barbie doll can be seen rocking a curve-hugging black mini dress, a jean jacket, and black booties, complete with Graham's long brunette locks.
"That is awesome," one Instagram commented on an Instagram picture of Graham posing side-by-side with the Barbie. "Finally a real doll. You rock!"
While Graham's doll is not available for purchase, as it is just a one-off, we hope the positive reactions inspire more and more influential brands to create products that help shape healthier, happier relationships between young girls and their bodies — no matter their size.
