When you've amassed a large following on social media, occasionally there might be a few trolls along the way. And although actress Ariel Winter isn't afraid to fight back against her haters, she recently experimented with a new tactic — thanking them and showering them with love.
Over the weekend, the 18-year-old Modern Family actress shared her thoughts on Instagram.
"Every time someone bullies me online it gives me a chance to re-emphasize to my fans, and even to myself, how important self-acceptance is," Winter wrote in her post. "Those who say such harsh things on my Instagram, thank you for this opportunity — but the question I ask myself every time I read the mean comments is if this is how you talk to a stranger online, I can only imagine how cruelly you speak to yourself."
Winter asked her trolls to put an end to the hateful speech and find a way to love their flaws.
"I love my fans and I love my bullies for what they truly NEED is love," she wrote. "Take the high road, there is less traffic."
As of September 13, Winter's post has received over 48,000 likes.
Winter's inspiring Instagram message comes on the heels of a keyword moderation tool launched by the social media platform on Tuesday. Instagram's new tool automatically blocks comments with words deemed by the user to be offensive.
Proponents of the new tool praise it for filtering out trolls and spam. But critics argue that the tool potentially limits user expression.
