'Modern Family' Star Wasn't Afraid To Show Her Scars On The Red Carpet — Here's Why

Ariel Winter shuts down the haters.

Ariel Winter, who plays Alex Dunphy on the ever-hilarious comedy series Modern Family, got serious with her fans about her look for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

Over the weekend, Winter wore a Romona Keveza gown to the award show, rocking (what we think) was her most fearless accessory on the red carpet: her scars.

In an interview with Glamour magazine, Winter explained that before her surgery, she felt pressured to dress appropriately in both her everyday life and at formal events. And the criticism was intense.

"Everyone would [say], 'Why is she dressing so mature? That's so inappropriate for her age!' I understood what they were saying. It's not like I wanted to pick out those inappropriate dresses, it's just that I didn't really have another choice, or I was going to get ridiculed. It's hard when you're a teenage girl and you already have a lot of ridicule and then you pile on more, and it's kind of…it just gets too much," Winter told Glamour magazine.

Post-surgery, Winter adds that she felt "great...You feel like a new person. You feel like this is how I was supposed to be."

So at the 2016 SAG Awards, Winter wore a gown that let her scars be seen. She explained her decision in a tweet:

The tweet ignited a ton of positive responses, like the ones below:

To which Winter replied:

So no matter what your scars may be, don't be ashamed of them. Wear them proud, because they're what make you you.
