When He Found Out Her Grandparents Only Had Months To Live, He Planned The Perfect Proposal

"Toby, being the thoughtful guy that he is decided to go ahead and put his plan into motion."

After receiving incredibly difficult news, this woman's boyfriend helped to brighten up her devastated family's day with a loving surprise. On the Love What Matters Facebook page, Sheri Grippo Cabral shared that her 85-year-old grandmother developed stage 4 cancer, which spread throughout her body, and her 92-year-old grandfather's body is "just slowly shutting down." They were given months to live.

"Out of all of the grandkids, my sister Angi, has always had the strongest bond with Grandma and Grandpa, even after moving 15 hours away from them," Sheri wrote. "We used to live across the street when we were little and Angi used to sneak out of our house every night at 4 a.m. and crawl in bed between them. She and grandpa talk almost every day on the phone. She even got a tattoo on her back of his name and an image of the division he was with in WWII."

After learning about the diagnosis, the family decided to plan a special beach trip with four generations of their family. "My parents, my uncle, us, and our kids," Sheri explained. "We quickly made the plans to drive from Missouri and Denver to Florida, where they live for one last beach party!"

Sheri's sister, Angi Grippo, is in a serious relationship and realized what her grandparents' diagnosis meant for her future. She told her boyfriend, Toby Freeman, that was devastated they wouldn't get to attend her wedding.

"There obviously would be no way that her very favorite people, my grandparents, would make it to see her down the aisle," Sheri wrote. "Toby, being the thoughtful guy that he is decided to go ahead and put his plan into motion. He wouldn't be able to make a wedding happen in time, but he certainly could do the next best thing."

Toby rushed to plan a surprise engagement that would take place on the beach during their family trip so that Angi's grandparents could be a part of their special moment. He even enlisted the help of some of Angi's family members and included them in the surprise.

"We coaxed Angi down to the beach by telling her that my daughter, her niece, would be practicing a song in front of everyone for a performance this summer," Sheri wrote. "Angi, who is my daughter's number one fan, was front row and center to video her singing. It just so happened that it was Angi and Toby's song. Shortly after the song began, Angi turned around to Toby on his knee to pop the question surrounded by 4 generations of Angi's people, Grandma and Grandpa included. This was the sweetest moment that I can remember witnessing in quite some time. We are so grateful that Grandma and Grandpa were a part of it."

Toby's gesture serves as a reminder of what family is all about — coming together to support each other through thick and thin. And it wasn't just Angi — who said "yes" to the proposal — who appreciated it.

"They just kept saying 'I love you, I love you' through the tears," Angi told HuffPost. "Later they admired the ring and talked about how wonderful Toby is."

"It brought them both to tears, which we had never seen before!" Sheri added. "They were so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a witness to the proposal, surrounded by their favorite people at their favorite place."
