You may recognize singer Alanis Morissette for her hits "Ironic," "You Learn," or "You Oughta Know," but now Morissette is gaining attention for something other than her singing — an Instagram photo she posted Wednesday with a powerful and timely message.
In the photo, the entertainer and mother is seen breastfeeding her daughter, Onyx, while wearing a sticker that reads "I voted" on her breast. The caption reads, "#EvenWhenYouCantLeaveTheHouse," making the point that there is NO excuse not to vote. Even if you're a busy new mom.
Redbook magazine points out two things about the photo, "One: keep normalizing breastfeeding photos! Two: Being housebound while breastfeeding is not a reason to pass up on your opportunity to vote. Three: VOTE."
To the first point, Morissette joins a slew of women who are working to normalize public breastfeeding. In March, one blogger posted a photo of herself breastfeeding her baby while attending a black-tie wedding. In September, Kelly Stanley posted a photo to Instagram that showed her breastfeeding mid-yoga pose.
"Because no woman should ever feel like she is being inappropriate or immodest by feeding her baby, anywhere, ever," Stanley wrote.
And to the other points, election day is now less than a week away (November 8), so Morissette's call to action is more pressing than ever.
We applaud Morissette for reminding women, and our country, of such important issues, and we hope that they're heard loud and clear.
