This Walmart Closed And Was Abandoned, Then The Town Did Something Amazing With It.

Urban revival.

This building in McAllen, TX used to be just another Walmart, but the store closed down and was abandoned, leaving a massive empty space containing only the ghosts of underpaid workers and bad bargains.

But it has since been transformed into the largest one-floor public library in America.

The cavernous 124,500-square-foot space features its own auditorium, a quiet reading room, electronic classrooms, an art gallery, several meeting rooms, a used book store, and rows and rows of books throughout its modern, airy interior.

The library is also kid friendly, with an accoustically isolated children's area and a teen reading room.

The exterior of the library is beautifully landscaped, with a walking trail, water feature accents, an outdoor area for kids, and an canopy by the entrance.

The project won the 2012 Library Interior Design Award from the International Interior Design Association.

The library has become a popular fixture of the town.

Within one month of opening its doors to the public, the McCallen library has seen a 23-percent increase in new members.
