When you look at a model in a high fashion ad, what do you see? Most of us see a person we can't relate to. Someone who appears physically perfect by society's standards (even if they've been Photoshopped, and air-brushed), and someone with seemingly unobtainable glamour.
But what if that model were replaced by a person like us? Would we be more willing to buy the garments? Would beauty standards finally become more realistic? While French former fashion magazine editor Nathalie Croquet considers these possibilities in her project Spoof — a series of recreated high fashion ads featuring herself instead of the original models — her point is mainly to highlight that most things we see and experience should be taken with a grain of salt.
Croquet created Spoof with photographer Daniel Schweizer, and the help of stylists and makeup artists. On inspiration for the project, she told BuzzFeed: "Women, consumption, retouching, cosmetics, aging, beauty, those all come to mind, but truly those issues are up for debate. I feel people need a more spiritual approach to life, and good fun. I'm happy to give them that, even if I'm just making fun of myself."
Now, take a look at these pictures of Croquet side-by-side with the original ad. We know which ones we prefer. How about you?
