On average, cake lasts about three months to a year, stored or frozen. But a married couple from Satellite Beach, Fla., doesn't really care about expiration dates and is taking the wedding cake tradition to a whole other level.
For the last 60 anniversaries, Ann and Ken Fredericks have eaten a bite from their same wedding fruit cake made in 1955. The couple, who are in their 80s, store what's left of the dessert (4-inches-by-3-inches, to be exact) in a coffee can in the pantry next to a yellowed piece of paper that reads "Top tier, Ann's wedding cake."
"Every year, we unwrap it, pour brandy over it — because you need to moisten it — and we break off a piece," she told Florida Today. "Now, our children are appalled that we would be eating something that's 60 years old. But believe me, it's quite tasty, as long as it's got enough brandy on it.
"And it's never made us sick."
They've offered a piece of the cake to their children, but they're erring on the side of caution.
While its true spoiled food isn't recommended to eat by any means and can result in sickness, it's true that some bacterias in old foods don't cause the same sickness as others do.
"It has lasted us 60 years, and so has the marriage," Ann told Florida Today, "which is much more important than the wedding cake."
Perhaps the Fredericks got lucky in love and level of spoilage.
