Modern tattooing runs the gamut of the artistic spectrum, mimicking forms and techniques ranging from pointillism to photorealism, to even more unconventional reimaginings of needle and ink-like cross-stitch. The majority of tattoos we've covered on A Plus have been intended to represent something, rather than replicate it. Some of them may look like photos, but we know that they're intended to look like photos — they don't challenge our perceptions of objects in space.

We searched out the best examples of 3-D tattoos on Instagram, looking for work that either seemed to show something sitting on top of the skin, or actually in or beneath the skin. That may seem like a fine line to draw, but if you take a look at these 11 tattoos, we think you'll understand.
