25 Things That Were Cool In The '90s And Are Still Cool Today

According to Reddit, anyway.

Redditor Miss0tique asked, "What was actually cool in the '90s, that is still cool today?" The 9,000+ responses on the Reddit thread prove the '90s weren't just cool — they were, dare we say, ice-cold.

Modern society is often criticized for its fast-paced, throwaway culture, so it's always nice to remind ourselves of the many wonderful trends, brands, and people that have endured. These items are often meaningful reflections of our culture, even if it's something "silly" like a children's card game-turned-TV show-turned-video game-turned-global phenomenon.

Even after 20 years, these '90s things are still cool as a cucumber.

1. Nintendo

We'll always have a special place in our hearts for our favorite video games, but no one epitomizes that timeless joy more than the boy unwrapping a Nintendo 64 on Christmas in this famous YouTube video.

2. Snoop Dogg

Also referred to as "Snoop Rock/Snoop Doggy Dogg/Snoop Lion/DJ Snoopadelic/Snoopzilla/Bigg Snoop/Dogg Occupation" by Redditor partyintheUSSR. Whatever you want to call him, he's even cooler now than he was then.

3. Cartoons

4. The Internet

Though we wouldn't necessarily want to hear it again, even the dial-up tone is still cool in its own retro way.

5. "What Is Love" by Haddaway

This song sold over 2.5 million singles worldwide by '94, but its popularity reached almost mythic heights after it became the theme song of A Night at the Roxbury. "Even today we have a reflexive reaction [to] 'Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more,' " writes Reddit user PacSan300

6. Samuel L. Jackson

He basically invented "cool" and embodies it in any decade. Need we say more?

7. Antartica

Ba dum hiss.

8. Sitcoms (and their revivals)

The overwhelming popularity of Fuller House and Girl Meets World shows good, clean, family fun never goes out of style.

9. Pokemon

10. Quoting movies about teenage girls

From Clueless to Mean Girls to Pitch Perfect, our vocabularies have been endlessly enriched by these cinematic masterpieces.

11. Flannel

12. Justin Timberlake

He says he brought sexy back in 2006, but, let's be real, it never left.

13. The Spice Girls

14. Disney movies

Many of Disney's most beloved animated classics (Beauty and the Beast, '91; Aladdin, '92; The Lion King, '94; Toy Story, '95 — just to name a few) were made in the '90s and still endure in the hearts and minds of children and former-children alike today.

15. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

16. John Stamos

We're still asking him to "have mercy" on us with his ageless beauty.

17. Nirvana

18. Air Jordans

19. Leonardo DiCaprio

The '90s gave us Leo's first serious (and seriously attractive) roles in Romeo + Juliet ('96) and Titanic ('97). After being nominated and snubbed over the next twenty years, homeboy finally won his first Oscar for The Revenant.

20. Kate Winslet

Because you can't have one without the other, but mostly because she's Kate freaking Winslet.

21. Hip-hop

Many consider the '90s the Golden Age of hip-hop, so it's no one-hit-wonder its fan base has only increased over the past 20 years. Much of today's hip-hop and pop music can trace its roots to the '90s.

22. Jean Jackets

23. Big Butts

We couldn't lie then, and we're certainly not about to start now.

24. Boy Bands

New Kids On the Block might've given way to One Direction, but we're still swooning over their angelic voices and smooth dance moves.

25. The word "cool" itself

While the word "cool" has been around for decades, people seemed to forget it was actually slang and not just a regular vocabulary word in the '90s. This remains true to this day. How cool.
