He Created A Genius Commercial To Sell His Fiancé's 'Crappy' 1996 Honda Accord

Now people actually want to buy it because "luxury is a state of mind."

Carrie Hollenbeck had been driving her 1996 Honda Accord which she nicknamed "Greenie" since she was in high school. But with more than 140,000 miles on it, an interest in Bluetooth technology, and a desire to reduce her carbon footprint, Hollenbeck knew it was time to say goodbye to Greenie. So, she enlisted the help of her fiancé, Max Lanman, to sell it.  

Lanman is a Los Angeles-based writer and director, so he decided to get a bit more creative than most people looking to sell a 21-year-old vehicle. The idea came to him during a drive to Big Sur with Carrie a few years ago. 

"It just dawned on me that it would be funny to make a high-end commercial for a crappy car," Lanman told SFGATE. "[Carrie is] a super sentimental person so it took two years for her to be ready to sell it."



But when she was ready, he got to work.

He spent about a year putting together a commercial for Greenie that looks just like a professional car ad — complete with motivational narration, a picturesque cliff-side drive, and close-ups of interior details such as the built-in, dusty cassette player. It even a signature tagline: "Luxury is a state of mind." 

"You, you're different. You do things your way. That's what makes you one-of-a-kind," the narrator says in the ad. "You don't need things. You're happy with who you are. You don't care about money. You have everything you've ever wanted. You don't do it for appearances. You do it because it works. And this? This is not a car. This is you. It's a lifestyle. A choice. Your choice. Introducing a used 1996 Honda Accord. A car for people who have life figured out and just need a way to get somewhere." 

It's a perfect parody — and, as it turns out, an effective ad. The Kelley Blue Book values the car at approximately $1,432, but Lanman listed the vehicle on eBay with a starting bid of $499. However, after just five days, bidding had reached $150,000, according to TODAY. Unfortunately, eBay canceled the listing. In a statement to NBC, the company explained the cancelation was due to "unusual bidding activity" and that they "put additional measures in place to ensure a successful auction."

Greenie has since been re-listed, and is currently at a more modest $3,300 on eBay. Lanman's ad vent viral after he posted the YouTube link for the video on Reddit and now has nearly 4 million views.

"I'm beside myself," Lanman told TODAY. "I could never have imagined that this thing that I made with my friends ... is now being watched by people all over the world."
