Anyone who has ever had a furbaby — a much-loved dog, cat, or any other domesticated animal, really — can attest to the love between humans and animal companions. The relationship is something quite unlike any other we experience in life: one marked with an uncanny natural communication that transcends species. Who hasn't experienced what seems to be sympathy from an animal when we are sad, or the joy with which we are greeted when we are reunited with pets after a long journey?
A dog or cat may spend 16 or 17 years with us before finally passing on and although we may intellectually understand that we will more than likely outlive them, the grief that comes when we finally have to say goodbye can be devastating.
That's what makes this collection of moments recounted by animal guardians so revealing. Each of these stories were posted to the Whisper App, which allows people to anonymously confess and spill their hearts about things they might not otherwise ever be able to talk about.
Not only do these confessions serve as a kind of catharsis for the writers, but each leave you, the reader, with the best kind of ache in your heart: the kind that reminds you not to take anything or anyone for granted.
