Emotions ran high within the first 10 minutes of the Women's World Cup final on Sunday in Vancouver, Canada. A strong three goal-lead within the starting minutes put the U.S. Women's National Team on course to lift the trophy, and they largely dominated the rest of the high-stakes game despite Japan relentlessly pushing forward. The nail-biting Women's World Cup final saw the U.S. triumph over its Japanese counterparts with a 5-2 score, and one of the most crucial players, USWNT forward Abby Wambach, kissed her wife Sarah Huffman in celebration after the final whistle was blown.
Wambach, who was instrumental in the USWNT's incredible performance throughout the tournament, ran to her wife Huffman at the end of the 90 minutes, and the two shared an emotional kiss. Photos and videos of the kiss were widely circulated on the Internet, with those on social media including the hashtag #LoveWins that was popularized after the Supreme Court's legalization of same-sex marriage. The happy couple married in Hawaii in October, and their ecstatic kiss further validated SCOTUS' decision on marriage equality.
Sunday's exciting final drew more viewers than the men's World Cup final last year — an astonishing feat, considering the little publicity surrounding the women's soccer tournament in relation to the men's.
So it was no surprise these 11 celebrities, too, celebrated the USWNT's World Cup win. From President Obama to Beyoncé, celebrities everywhere cheered on the U.S. women's soccer team and congratulated them on their win.
