10 Powerful New iPhone Tricks

This is some next-level stuff.

The new iPhone software (iOS8) packs a ton of awesome features. Here are 10 hidden gems you probably had no idea existed.

1. Hands-Free Siri ("Hey Siri")

Go to Settings > General > Siri and turn on on Allow "Hey Siri." Now you don't have to press any buttons to access Siri. Just say "Hey Siri" and she'll appear like the artifically intelligent bottle genie she is. (Note: this only works when your phone is plugged in.)

2. Send audio messages

Tap and hold the microphone icon to the right of the text field and it'll start recording. Then hit the up arrow to send or the X to cancel.

3. Add photos, gifs, and videos to notes

The new iPhone software lets you paste pics, vids, and gifs (yay!) into your notes. Just touch the screen and select Insert Photo. Or if you've copied your image already, you can just paste it in directly.

4. And use rich formatting in your notes

Select the text you want to format and go nuts!

5. Take a timed selfie

In the camera app, switch to Face Camera mode (aka selfie mode) and touch the little timer icon at the top. It'll allow you to select either a 3 or 10 second time delay. Easy as that!

6. Hide any photo without deleting it

If you don't want a photo to appear in Moments, Collections, or Years (but sill in your Albums) all you have to do is hold your finger on the photo and your iPhone will give you the option to hide it. If you want to undo this, just hold your finger on it again an you'll be given the option to unhide. Cool, right?

7. Make a time-lapse video

Another awesome thing you can do is record a time-lapsee video. Swipe right in the camera app and select time-lapse.

8. Count your steps

This one is really cool. Your iPhone will tell you how many steps you take in a day—and give you weekly, monthly, and yearly averages. You can now track how active you've been and adjust your routine accordingly. (Studies suggest that you should take a minimum of 10,000 steps each day.) Sitting is the new smoking!

9. Add your emergency health information

Using the new Health app, you can create your own medical ID containing all your important medical info—allergies, blood type, medical condition—which can be shown on the lock screen when you make an emergency call. (You'll see the Medical ID button in the lower left corner.) This could quite literally save your life. Do it now.

10. Locate a lost phone after the battery dies

Another awesome new feature. Losing your phone is scary, and this will help you find it—even if your battery runs out. Go to Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone and select Send Last Location. If you lose your phone (or iPad), sign into iCloud.com and it'll show you your device's last known location on the map. Pretty cool, right?
