National Adoption Month

Star-Studded 'Voices For the Voiceless' Benefit Helps Older Youth In Foster Care

"Adopting an older youth really changed our life in so many ways, it made us parents ... We were instant parents."

As we approach National Adoption Month in November, A Plus is looking forward to highlighting the stories of those in need of forever homes and spreading awareness about adoption. Throughout the month we will be collaborating with You Gotta Believe (YGB), the only New York City organization specializing in helping older foster youth find forever families.

Just before the month officially kicks off, YGB held its third annual Voices For The Voiceless benefit at The Town Hall in NYC on Monday evening, October 30.

The event was hosted by Sirius XM Radio Host Seth Rudetsky (Disaster!) and James Wesley. The star-studded event featured special appearances and musical performances by two-time Tony nominee Jonathan Groff, Glee's Jenna Ushkowitz, four-time Tony Award-winning producer Jeffrey Seller, and Orange Is The New Black's Danielle Brooks, just to name a few.

Proceeds from the event support YGB's mission that every child who leaves foster care does so with a family. Every 23 minutes a young person ages out of the foster care system and is too often forced to face their future all alone. YGB aims to change this statistic by fulfilling the promise made to every youth when they enter the foster care system — a family.

"Adopting an older youth really changed our life in so many ways, it made us parents. Between my son who was adopted … he was 16, and my daughter who was adopted at 21, we were instant parents," Nicole, a YGB parent of two said in a video. "And we were instant parents of teenagers, so we jumped really into that teenage stage, we jumped into high school and proms and first jobs and learning how to drive. So it really made our life so much fuller, in so many new experiences that we got to experience with them."

Altogether, the previous years' events raised nearly one million dollars for YGB's ongoing efforts to provide older foster care children with loving parents.
