National Adoption Month

Kesha Helps Children In Foster Care With Her #PrayingForAChange Fundraising Initiative

"There are so many people in need, and I want to lend my voice to what you are praying for."

November is National Adoption Month. In honor of the month, we will be bringing attention to the thousands of people in foster care awaiting forever homes, as well as those who provide and advocate for them. These stories emphasize the idea that families are bound together by the love they share, rather than their biological roots.

On November 8, pop star Kesha announced her #prayingforachange fundraising initiative, encouraging fans to set up Facebook fundraisers to benefit any 501c3 nonprofit organization that's important to them. "There are so many people in need, and I want to lend my voice to what you are praying for," she said in an accompanying video. "...Together, I really think that we can make a difference."

Kesha then encouraged her fans to share with her the causes "closest to your heart." From those submissions, she and her team have begun to choose different causes to promote on her social media platforms, spreading awareness and raising donations.

Less than a week after her original announcement, Kesha recognized fan Courtney Poole's fundraiser for My BELONGings Charitable Foundation, an organization that provides clothes, shoes, blankets, and more to children in crisis entering foster care, as her first cause through #prayingforachange.

Founded by Kalli Britton, a foster parent, whose own foster children arrived with nothing, according to the organization's website. "We would have fun making late night runs loading the kids up with what they might need immediately.  However, we quickly learned this was not how things usually happened," she wrote, "As our children's case managers would make their monthly visits, we would load the managers up with clothes for them to take to other foster kids. This became a treasured resource."

That inspired her to create My BELONGings, fueled by the simple intention "for children in foster care to have something to call their own and to snuggle with starting their first night in care." Each child's my BELONGings duffle contains essential items like shoes, a brush, clothes, but the items Britton considers even more important are a book, a stuffed animal, and a snuggle blanket, as they can bring foster children "a small sense of comfort, security and even a little peace."

Kesha hopes to be a part of a larger force that provides such comfort, security, and peace. "There are so many people who need help but when I read the story about how this amazing organization provides duffels full of clothes, shoes, a book, a snuggle blankets and soothing stuffed animals to children in crisis entering foster care homes," she explained in a social media post. "I knew that I had to share this first."
