This 25 Pound Blanket Helps Relieve Stress And Anxiety While You Sleep

"Our mission here is to make something where anyone can feel comfortable looking for help."

May is Mental Health Month. Throughout the month we will bring you stories about mental health and the importance of breaking surrounding stigmas, as well as highlighting those who live with related conditions and are advocating awareness.

Sometimes a giant hug is all it takes to help relieve a little stress and anxiety, but not all of us have someone constantly around to oblige. Others don't like human contact to begin with. Still, the feeling of pressure and warmth surrounding our bodies can be a great reliever.

To help provide access to such comfort, entrepreneur John Fiorentino began a Kickstarter campaign to launch the "Gravity Blanket," a weighted comforter that helps reduce anxiety and stress while you sleep.

Fiorentino was originally working on an organic pillow concept with sleep scientists, when he discovered the benefits of sleeping under a weighted blanket.

Martha Stewart points to research in the Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders that shows weighted blankets help people fall asleep faster and experience more restful sleeps. Other studies have even explored the way weighted blankets can help those with autism.

After Fiorentino tried one out for himself, the seed for the Gravity Blanket was planted.

Now, the blanket is ready to hit the market with its Kickstarter launch. According to the Gravity Blanket's Kickstarter page, the blanket is designed to be roughly 10 percent of your body weight. Buyers will be able to choose between 15, 20 and 25 pound blankets and each one is made out of a soft microfiber outer layer with non-toxic poly pellets providing the weight.

The secret to the blanket's effectiveness is that the weight of the comforter reportedly increases serotonin and melatonin levels and decreases cortisol levels. This fluctuation will hopefully improve your sleep and your mood.

The Gravity Blanket's Kickstarter campaign launched with a goal of $21,500. As of May 1, it has exceeded that with an impressive $975,262 raised. And there are still 29 days to go in the campaign.

While the attention the blanket has received is brilliant for a new business, it's also great for raising awareness about mental health. The Gravity Blanket founder told Elite Daily how the brand's goal is to break down the barriers and shame of getting help for mental health issues.

"Our mission here is to make something where anyone can feel comfortable looking for help. We want the average guy or girl to feel OK and comfortable reaching for something to help with stress or anxiety," Fiorentino said.

With many people supporting the campaign and others expressing on social media how they hope the blanket will help with their stress and/or anxiety, it seems the brand is already working on accomplishing its goal.
